Talk about crazy. An entire nation of 80,000,000 has been disconnected from their Internet. To combat information between protestors being set to and fro, the Egyptian government has shut down the Internet.
All they had to do was issue an order to all ISPs in Egypt to shut down service. Around 3,500 Border Gateway Protocol or BGP routes, vanished in an instant.
It's estimated that 93% of Egyptian networks are unreachable. One major ISP, Noor Group, is still up and running. Perhaps not coincidentally, Noor happens to host Egypt's stock exchange. Web connections used by the government and military are also likely still operating on their own private ISPs. Some Egyptian users might also be able to use old-fashioned dial-up connections.
